Capes competed in three Olympic games, 20th in qualifying at the 1972 Olympics, he finished sixth in 1976 and fifth in 1980. Capes was the Commonwealth Games champion in 1974 and 1980, the European Indoor Champion in 1974 and 1976. After his shot put career, Capes competed in strongman competitions, winning the Highland Games five times (1983-'87) and the World's Strongest Man in 1983 and '85 and the 1987 World Muscle Power Championship.
