1979 U.K. SUPERTEAMS - ATHLETICS vs. ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
The U.K. Superteams consisted of eight events, with the winning margin in the first seven events 3-1. The final event consisted of three pulls in the tug of war, with each contest earning one point, thus the final pull in the tug of war served as the overall tiebreaker. The footballers easily won four of the first five events, with a 4-3 win in basketball coming in a very physical contest that drew the ire of athletics captaoin Geoff Capes. The trackers came back to win the canoeing and the obstacle course, despite the struggles of pole vaulter Brian Hooper to remain on the balance beam. The athletics team then won all three efforts in the tug of war to win the overall competition.
