Three Time European Indoor 800 Meter Champion
Carroll ran at Villanova University, and in 1964 anchored the 4x880 yard relay team that established a world record. He was the European Indoor Champion over 800 meters in 1966, '67 and '68. At the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, he ran the 800 meters, finishing fifth in his heat and failing to advance. Carroll ran both the 400 and 800 meters at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. He set a personal record of 46.83 in the 400 meters, but was sixth in the heat and eliminated. He was third in his 800 meter heat, just missing a qualifying spot. His personal record over the half mile was 1:46.6. At age 56, Carroll died of a heart attack after his morning jog.
