1979 WORLD SUPERSTARS

Brian Budd returned to the Bahamas to defend his title against a very competitive group of athletes. European co-champions Brian Jacks and Ties Kruize were unable to attend, so the top European representative was 1964 Olympic long jump champion Lynn Davies of Wales. The other British representative was boxer Dave "Boy" Green who won his heat in Britain, but finished just fourth in the U.K. Final. Ireland was represented for the first time by gaelic footballer Pat Spillane. Two other athletes, Dallas Cowboy kicker Rapahel Septien represented Mexico and Brazilian auto racer Emerson Fittipaldi, were invited without qualifying.

Tennis proved very competitive as the winner of the U.S. Superstars tennis final, Joe Theismann, was eliminated by Septien in the quarterfinals. New Zealand's Peter Snell won again in the tennis final, defeating Jim Taylor as he had in the 1977 World Superstars final. Budd set a new record of 57.20 seconds in the 100 yard swimming, holding off Wayne Grimditch and Dwight Stones. Greg Pruitt won both the weight lifting and 100 yard dash. Budd bettered his own record with a half mile run of 1:57.36. As usual, Grimditch won the bike race and Dave "Boy" Green won the soccer test. The rowing included the men with the three fastest times ever as Grimditch beat Jim Taylor in the final and Budd snuck into third ahead of Snell. Greg Pruitt tied Lynn Swann's record of 22.58 seconds in the obstacle course.
