Born in Saint Lucia, Charles competed in the 80+kg and open categories of kumite, or combative, discipline of the sport. He won gold medals at the World Games in the open category in 1981 and 1985. At the World Championships, Charles captured a bronze medal in 1984, the gold in 1986 and two silver medals in 1988.
