1976 Olympic Lightweight Champion
Two days before the start of the 1976 Olympics, Davis' mother passed away. He persevered and defeated Romania's Simion Cutov for the gold medal. He was voted the Val Barker award for the most outstanding boxer of the Olympics. David had previously captured the 1974 World Championship in the featherweight category. In his professional career, Davis amassed a record of 36-6-1, fighting and losing three title bouts. Howard Davis passed away from lung cancer at the age of 59.
