Immortalized with the nickname "Dr. J" Erving became one of the most influential basketball players of all-time. Leaving the University of Massachusetts before graduation, Erving signed with the Virginia Squires on the A.B.A., after two seasons as an all-star, Erving was traded to the New York Nets and led the team to the first of two A.B.A. championships in 1974 on the way to collecting the first of three consecutive A.B.A. scoring titles and M.V.P. awards. Following the A.B.A./N.B.A. mereger, Erving was sold to the Philadelphia 76ers for $3,000,000 and played 11 seasons with the 76ers. He was an all-star every season, five times a first-team All-N.B.A. selection, the 1981 M.V.P. and led the 76ers to the N.B.A. championship in 1983. Erving scored 30,026 points in his professional career and was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 1993.
