In 21 major league seasons with the Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants and Detroit Tigers the thirdbaseman-firstbaseman was an All-Star in 1973 and '83. He led the American League with 40 home runs in 1985 and ended his career with 414 home runs and 1,354 R.B.I. Evans has been described by author Bill James as "the most underrated player in baseball history, absolutely number one on the list," primarily because his defensive skill, home run power, and ability to draw walks in a long career which were offset by a low career batting average of .248.
