A pioneer drag racer, Garlits sported the nickname "Big Daddy" as he won three National Hot Rod Association World Championships and a total of 144 events. He was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1989; the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1997 and Automotive Hall of Fame in 2004.
