1957 & 1958 Wimbledon & U.S. Open Champion
Gibson was the first black tennis player to compete in a Grand Slam event, and the first to win a Grand Slam event. In 1956, she won the French Open singles and doubles titles as well as the Wimbledon doubles championship. In 1957, she won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open doubles titles and the Wimbledon & U.S. Open singles titles and was named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year. In 1958, she won both singles and doubles at Wimbledon and singles at the U.S. Open and won the A.P. Athlete of the Year again. She retired from amateur tennis after the 1958 season and played a series of professional exhibition matches. In 1964, she played a number of events on the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour. In 1971, she was elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
