1976 WOMEN'S PRELIMINARY 2
Prior to the competiton, Olympic swimming champion Keena Rothhammer injured her ankle on the obstacle course water hazard and was hospitalized after two surgeries as the event began. The competiton began with frigid weather in Florida, the temperature in the mid-30's for the start of the tennis event at 9:00am. Nonetheless, Laura Ching set a record in swimming in a close race over diver Micki King. Heading into the final event, the obstacle course, the six women who had qualified for the final all had a chance to take the overall title (Jefferson 33; Ching 32 1/3; Cutter 30 1/3; Gibson 28; King 26). One by one the athletes eliminated themselves with penalties in the obstacle course until skiier Kiki Cutter and surfer Laura Ching, both veterans of the 1975 Superstars, were left to run the obstacle course final. Cutter defeated Ching to win the second preliminary round.
