Havlicek played collegiate ball at Ohio State and was a member of the school's 1960 N.C.A.A. championship team. Drafted out of college by the Boston Celtics in 1962, and also drafted by the Cleveland Browns of the N.F.L. Havlicek tried out as a wide receiver with the Browns, but elected to play for the Celtics. Havlicek played for the Celtics from 1962 to '78, winning eight N.B.A. championships. John Havlicek is the Celtics all-time leader in points and games played, scoring 26,395 points (6th all-time in the N.B.A.) a playing 1,270 games (4th all-time). He became the first player to score 1,000 points in 16 consecutive seasons, with his best season coming during the 1970-71 season when he averaged 28.9 points per game. Winner of the N.B.A. Finals M.V.P. in 1974 when the Celtics defeated the Milwaukee Bucks. Havlicek was elected to the National Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983.
