1976 MEN'S PRELIMINARY 1

The 1976 Superstars season began with the familiar, as Kyle Rote, Jr. won a preliminary round for the third straight season. Shot putter Brian Oldfield, who had been barred from the weight lifting two years earlier was allowed to enter and set a record of 300 pounds. Skier Hank Kashiwa pushed Rote all the way, and set a record of 39.12 seconds in the rowing. 1973 British Superstars champion David Hemery made his American debut and qualified for the finals. Hemery and ice hokcey player Bobby Hull finished in an unusual tie for first place in the bike race.
