Two Time World Record Setter - One Hour Run
Hermens withdrew from the 1972 Olympics following the massacre of Israeli athletes. In 1975 he established a new world record of 20,907 meters and was named the Dutch Athlete of the Year. In 1976, he established a new record of 20,944 which lasted until 1991. Hermens competed in the 1976 Olympics, finishing 10th in the 10000 meters and 25th in the marathon. He captured a bronze medal in the 10000 meters at the inagural IAAF World Cup in 1977. Following his career, Hermens became an extemely successful agent, representing such athletes as Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele.
