1975 DUTCH SUPERSTARS

The first Dutch Superstars boiled down to a duel between two of the finest Dutch sportsmen of the 1970's. Triple Olympic speed skating gold medalist Ard Schenk and the Dutch soccer captain Ruud Krol entered the final event tied at 40 points. Schenk stumbled in the final water hazard of the 600 meter steeplechase, but recovered to sprint to the finish and outdistance Krol for the title. Schenk entered the event as the only man with previous Superstars experience, having finished sixth in the Superstars finals in the United States in both 1974 and 1975.

The opening event was the 100 meter dash as Krol got to the line just ahead of Schenk. In the cycling event, the two speed skaters pulled away from the rest of the field, with Kuipers taking first. Schenk easily won the long jump over Kuipers to take the overall lead 24-21 over his fellow speed skater. With the speed skaters excluded, motocross driver Gerrit Wolsink beat out cylist Cees Stam in the roller skating event. The first day wrapped up as double Olympic juod champion Wim Ruska took the swimming over Krol. After five events Krol led Schenk 27-25 with Kuipers in third at 23 points and Wolsink with 21. Auto racer Gijs van Lennep won the gym test over Ruska and Stam captured the kayaking event. Krol defeated van Lennep in the tennis final to take the overall lead with 40 points to 33 for Schenk. However, Krol could not enter the soccer penalities and when Schenk took second in that event behind Jos Hermens, it set up a tie at 40 points entering the final event, the 600 meter steeplechase. Schenk, Krol and Kuipers broke away from the rest of the field early with Schenk taking the pace over the last half of the race. Schenk lost his footing as he jumped into the water hazard and got very wet, but he never relinquished his lead and used his skater's endurance to get to the line first with Kuipers holding Krol off for second place in the event.
