Born in Antigua, Hope represented Great Britain at welterweight in the 1972 Olympics, losing in the quarterfinals. On 4 March 1979, he knocked out the then WBC world champion Rocky Mattioli to capture the world title. Hope defended the title three times before losing to Wilfred Benitez on 23 May 1981 in a 12th round knockout. He finished his career with a 30-4-1 record with 24 knockouts.
