1972 Olympic 3000 Meter Steeplechase Silver Medalist

Jipcho first came into international notice when he set a fast pace in the final of the Olympic 1500 meter final in 1968, helping countryman Kip Keino win the gold medal while Jipcho finished 10th. At the 1972 Olympics, Jipcho failed to advance out of the heats of the 5000 metes, but took the silver medal behind Keino in the 3000 meter steeplechase. At the 1973, All-African Games, he won the 5000 meters and the steeplechase. That same season he set two world records in the steeplechase and was named the Track & Field News Athlete of the Year. At the 1974 Commonwealth Games, Jipcho won the 5000 meters and the steeplechase and won the bronze in the 1500 meters.
