1976 Olympic Light Welterweight Champion
Leonard won the gold medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal in the Light Welterweight division, defeating Andreas Aldama of Cuba. On November, 30, 1979 he defeated Wilfredo Benitez to win the WBC Welterweight Championship. He lost the title to Roberto Duran on June 20, 1980, but regained it by defeating Duran five months later. An eye injury forced his retirement in 1982, but he returned to the ring in 1987 and defeated Marvin Hagler to win the WBC Middleweight Championship. In 1988, Leonard defeated Donny Lalonde to win the WBC Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight Championships.
