Dutch Heavyweight Champion
Lubbers won eight Dutch amatuer championships, six in the light heavyweight division and two at heavyweight. He boxed at the 1964 Olympics as a light heavyweight, losing his first bout to Cosimo Pinto of Italy. Lubbers returned to the Olympics in 1968, winning his first bout over Talaat Dahshan of Egypt before losing a 3-2 decision to the home town favorite Joaquin Rocha in the quarterfinals. As a professional, he was the Dutch Heavyweight champion from 1971 until his 1981 retirement. Lubbers lost a 1973 twelve round decision to Muhammad Ali. In 1986, he was arrested for smuggling drugs into Portugal and spent four years in prison.
