Mahovlich was the number two overall pick in the 1962 draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He spent sixteen seasons in the N.H.L. with the Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins. He won four Stanley Cups with the Canadiens and was a member of the 1972 Summit Series Team from Canada that defeated the U.S.S.R.
