1976 CANADIAN SUPERSTARS

As more competitions were taking place worldwide in anticipation of the first World Superstars set for 1977, the first Canadian Superstars was organized for May 1976. The event caused headlines in Canada as the five athletes from the Canadian Football League were taken off the C.F.L. All-Star Team for missing practice the week before the game. Zenon Andrusyshyn, Terry Evanshen, Tony Gabriel, Peter Della Riva and Jim Young were in suburban Toronto on Tuesday and Wednesday prior to the Saturday game in Edmonton. As for the event itself, Marcel Dionne of the Los Angeles Kings grabbed the lead after one day with 30 points, but could only muster a third place finish in the obstacle course as Tony Gabriel picked up the ten points needed to win the event. Water skier George Athans had to withdraw after one day when he tore ligaments in his knee. I have little further information.
