Two-Time Olympic Silver Medalist
Making his Olymic debut at age 18 in 1972, Menendez failed to make the final in the K-2 1000 meters and K-4 1000 meters. At the 1975 World Championships in Belgarde, he won a bronze as part of the K-1 4x500 meter relay and helped Spain capture the gold medal in the K-4 1000 meters. In Montreal for the 1976 Olympics, he was fifth in the K-1 500 meters and captured a silver medal in the K-4 1000 meters. Winning five medals in the next three World Championships, Menendez captured two medals at the 1980 Olympics, a silver in the K-2 500 meters and a bronze in the K-2 1000 meters. He took one more bronze medal at the 1982 World Championships in the K-2 1000 meters. He competed in one more Olympics in 1984, failing to make the finals in the K-2 500 meters and finishing seventh in the K-2 1000 meters.
