1977 EUROPEAN FINAL
Once again the European finalists gathered at the Ahoy Stadium in Rotterdam for the third European final. The men that had qualified and were available for the final included all five heat winners and three athletes from countries not represented among the winners; Spain's canoeist Herminio Menendez; Swiss cyclo-cross champion Albert Zweifel and Belgian volleyballer Roger Maes. Menendez would be the only one of the three to challenge the five heat winners. English rugby star Keith Fielding sped to victory in the 100 meters; while Dutch hockey standout Ties Kruize took the early lead with a second in the 100 and victory in the canoeing. French judoka Jean-Paul Coche edged his countryman, pole vaulter François Tracanelli to win weight lifting; the Kruize captured another event in the swimming. Dutch speed skater Hans Van Helden won a tightly contested crossbow event, and then Coche won his second event by capturing the gym test barely over Menendez and Tracanelli to tie Kruize for first place. Kruize retook the lead by tying Menendez for first place in the soccer. Tracanelli got back into the mix with a win in the gymnasium obstacle course where Kruize was shut out. Fielding defeated favorite van Helden in the cycling to maintain a chance for the overall victory. Going into the 600 meter steeplechase, Fielding needed to win and have Kruize finish third or lower. Fielding took off at a furious pace with Kruize battling the rest of the field. Fielding was never challenged and crossed the finish line with his arms raised in victory, the crowd roaring. However, as Fielding turned around, he realized that the crowd was cheering for the Dutchman Kruize who passed van Helden in the home stretch to capture the Superstars championship. An exhausted Fielding was quickly interviewed by British television and he uttered one of the most famous quotes in Superstars, "It's a damn bloody shame."
