A four time N.B.A. All-Star, Monroe was picked second in the 1967 N.B.A. draft by the Baltimore Bullets out of Division II Winston-Salem State. He won the 1967-'68 Rookie of the Year and helped lead the Bullets into the playoffs each season with the team. In 1971, he was traded to the New York Knicks. The Knicks once again clashed with the Bullets in the playoffs in 1972 and 1973, and in '73 the Knicks with Monroe won the N.B.A. Finals. He was an All-Star with the Knicks in 1975 and '77 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1989. His career totals include 3,594 assists and 17,454 points. In 1996, Monroe was named to the N.B.A. 50th Anniversary team.
