Nyad was a long distance swimmer, who set a world record in 1979 of swimming 102.5 miles from Bimini to Florida. She had previously set the record of 7 hours 57 minutes for swimming around Manhattan Island. She later worked as a television commentator of ABC. Nyad was inducted into the Women's Sports Hall of Fame in 1986 and the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2003.
