Potvin was the first overall pick in the 1973 N.H.L. draft by the New York Islanders and played for the team through 1988. He won the Calder Award as the Rookie of the Year in 1973-'74 and won the Norris Trophy as the league's outstanding defenseman three times (1975-'76, '77-'78 and '78-'79). Potvin was a key member of the Islanders' four straight Stanley Cup championship teams from 1980 to '83. In his fifteen seasons, Potvin scored 310 goals and had 743 assists. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.
