Sherwood, who had ranked #2 in the world in 1967, captured the bronze medal at the 1968 Olympics. He followed up with a silver at the 1969 European Championships and a gold at the 1970 Commonwealth Games and was ranked in the top 10 of the world each year between 1967 and 1970.
