1981 U.K. CHALLENGE OF THE CHAMPIONS

The opening program of the UK's 1981 Superstars season was a Challenge of the Champions special featuring eight previous champions from the series. All four former U.K. champs; David Hemery, John Conteh, Tim Crooks and Brian Jacks; were present. They were joined by past master's winners Lynn Davies and John Sherwood and European heat winners Malcolm MacDonald and Keith Fielding. Jacks, the defending British and International champion was the presumptive favorite, but the competition was extremely stiff. Hemery edged Davies in swimming with Jacks a respectable third. Sherwood, the event record holder, won the basketball with Davies second and Jacks shut out. Fielding put himself in the mix with a tiebreaker win over Conteh in the crossbow, while Jacks was once again shut out. However, Jacks won the next three events to take a lead with 34 points to 26 for Sherwood. But it was Fielding who started to surge with a second place in canoeing and second place in the 100 meters and soccer. After eight events Jacks lead with 36 points followed by Fielding and Sherwood with 34, Hemery at 30, Davies at 28. Only the cycling aand steeplechase remained, but of the contenders only Fielding and Davies were entered in the final event. Jacks had won every U.K. and European event during his career, but he could only muster a fourth place finish as Fielding won the event and emerged with a nine point lead over Davies. Fielding only needed to finish the steeplechase and he took second behind Davies to win the Challenge of the Champions. Davies had injured his back which forced him out of the weight lifting event. Had Davies finished second in weight lifting, he would have beaten Fielding by one point.
