1979 U.K. National Discus Throw Champion
Slaney, a discus thrower who also competed in shot put, finished 15th at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. He was also the winner of Britain's Strongest Man competition in 1980 and 1982 and the runner-up for the European title in 1980, behind Geoff Capes. He married American world champion runner Mary Decker in 1985.
