Smulders led the Dutch gymnastics team at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. In 1972 the Dutch team finished ninth and Smulders finished 19th in the all-around. In 1976 the team finished 11th and Smulders took 22nd in the all-around. Her best individual apparatus finish was a 14th in qualifying for the uneven parallel bars in 1972.
