Stanley played college volleyball at Brigham Young and was a nominee for the Sullivan Award in 1967. He played for the 1968 U.S. Olympic Team, which finished in 7th place. Stanley also played for the national team in 1972, although they failed to qualify for the Olympics. One of the original players in the professional International Volleyball Association, he was a six time All-Pro selection from 1975 until 1980. Stanley was inducted into the U.S. Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1992. His son Clay was a member of the Olympic Champion U.S. Men's Team at the 2008 Olympics and Clay was selected the tournament M.V.P. Clay Stanley, along with Lindsay Davenport and Misty May-Traenor, became the third child of a member of the 1968 U.S. Men's Volleyball team to win an Olympic gold medal.
