1983 N.F.L. Most Valuable Player

Graduate of Notre Dame in 1971, Theismann was the runner-up to Jim Plunkett in the Heisman Trophy voting. He played two years for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League where he was an All-Star selection in 1971 and '73. Theismann joined the Washington Redskins in 1974 where he was a punt returner in 1974. he became the starting quarterback in 1978 and stayed with the Redskins for the rest of his career. Theismann led the Redskins to a victory in Super Bowl XVII. The following season he was selected as the N.F.L. M.V.P. in leading to Redskins into another Super Bowl, which they lost to the Raiders. He was also selected as the M.V.P. of the Pro Bowl. Theismann was a Pro Bowl selection in 1982 and '83. In 1985 his career ended when he suffered a compound fracture of his leg on a sack by Lawrence Taylor. He was worked as a football anaylst since retirement, currently for the N.F.L. Network. Theismann was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003.
