1976 Olympic 800 Meter & 1500 Meter Silver Medalist

Van Damme came to track late, winning the 1976 European Indoor 800 Meter Championship and capturing silver medals in both the 800 and 1500 meters at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. Later that year, Van Damme died in a car crash. A memorial meet which bears his name remains one of the major track and field events annually.
