Wood played professionally from 1970 to 1997, garnering more than 100 appearances for Blackppol, Everton, Crystal Palace and Inter Cardiff. He earned four caps for Scotland, and was a member of the Scottish squad for the 1982 World Cup, but did not play in a match. He was the Cyrstal Palace player of the year in 1986.
