Woodward played centre for the Leicester Tigers from 1979 to 1985, and later played for Manly from 1985 to 1990. He earned 21 caps for England from 1980 to 1984, and two for the British and irish Lions from 1980 to 1983. Woodward garnered his most fame as coach of the English team from 1997 to 2004, leading the squad to victory in the 2003 Rugby World Cup.
