1981 WORLD SUPERSTARS

South African Grand Prix driver Jody Scheckter surprised everyone and proved that auto racers are athletes by winning the fifth World Superstars title. Scheckter's win was keyed by his early victories over basketball's Rick Barry. Scheckter trailed Barry 4-1 in the tennis final, but took five straight games to win 6-4. He also trailed Barry in the 50 yard swimming, but the Warrior great missed his turn and Scheckter took second behind Russ Francis. Francis also won the weight lifting with a lift of 260 pounds to beat hurdler Renaldo Nehimiah. Declan Burns, the Irish champion, established a new record of 55 chin ups in the gym test and also equalled the record gym test total of 162 points. Scheckter again finished second in the gym test, helping his caused by applying motor oil to his shoes to help in the squat thrust portion of the competition. Barry was off the a very good start in his rowing heat, he had finished second in rowing in the Superstars final, but broke an oar an did not finish. Both Russ Francis and Andy Ripley encountered problems with their oar locks in the rowing and were given a re-race. In the re-race, International Superstars champion and British rugby player Andy Ripley set a record of 34.97 in the rowing beating Jim Taylor's two year old record by nearly two seconds. Francis stopped rowing with about 10 yards left and failed to score a point. Had Francis taken second in the rowing, he would have won the overall competition. Ripley also won the half mile run in under two minutes. Ann Meyers, who won the Women's Superstars for the second straight year, became the first woman to compete against men in Superstars competition. Meyers finished fifth out of eight competitiors in the swimming and third out of all eleven competitors in the soccer test.
