1976 EUROPEAN HEAT 2 - DUTCH HEAT
The second heat saw success from Austria ski jumper Karl Schnabl who impressed with his performance in the gym test. As David Vine reported in his book "The Superstars":
David Wilkie came to Vlaardingen in Holland for the next one and he was there, straight out of the water of Montreal and still carrying his swimming gold medal everywhere he went. And who could blame him.
He had some good results, including an outright victory in the football event, beating Holland's international goal keeper Piet Schrijvers of Ajax three times out of three in the slalom/dribbling test and then twice in five attempts from the penalty spot. It had to be the biggest Scottish bonus of all time! But during the second day, he faded after a gallant second in the gymnasium where we were appreciating the actions of out first-ever ski-jumper Superstar.
This was Karl Schnabl, the young Austrian Olympic champion, the man who in Innsbruck launched himself from the top of a man-made chute about the same height as St. Paul's Cathedral and then, at over seventy miles an hour, sailed through the air on skis for roughly the same distance as Webley's football pitch, goal-mouth to goal-mouth. When he hit the ice and snow, still traveling at about the same speed, he'd won the Olympic gold medal in front of his own crowd in one of the most spectacular sports you'll ever see.
Now he was showing us that there was a lot more to him than just that (Just that?) and finished a clear winner, nine points ahead of the Swedish speedway rider, Anders Michanek, who's spent too much of his time with English clubs. Walter Spanghero, the giant French rugby forward, had to take last place of the eight with thirteen points. He attempted to explain to us that thirteen didn't matter much - Big Walter was on his honeymoon! Last in the 100 metres, last in the swimming, the squat thrusts a nightmare...
