1976 Olympic 200 Meter Breaststroke Champion
At the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Wilkie took a silver medal in the 200 meter breaststroke. He won that event at the 1973 World Championships in Belgrade. In 1974, Wilkie won the 200 meter breaststroke and 200 meter individual medley events at both the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships. He won the 200 meter breaststroke again at the 1975 World Championships in Cali and took the Olympic gold medal in Montreal, the only men's event not won by the United States. He also claimed a silver medal in the 100 meter breaststoke. Wilkie is a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame.
