Septien played soccer professionally in Mexico from 1972-'74. He went to college at Louisiana-Lafayette, graduating in 1977. Septien was a 10th round pick of the New Orleans Saints and played the 1977 season with the Los Angeles Rams. He played for the Dallas Cowboys from 1978-'86 and played in the Pro Bowl following the 1981 season.
