Nine-time Alternative Elfstedentocht Champion

For years, Kruithof was a major force in marathon skating in the Netherlands. The Elfstedentocht is a major race held over waterways in the Netherlands when conditions allow. In was not held between 1963 and 1985 due in large part to water pollution. Considered a major challenger at the age of 48 in the 1985 race, Kruithof finished 12th. Between 1974 and 1991, he won the alternative Elfstedentocht, held abroad in nations such as Norway, Finland and Mongolia when the race could not be held in the Netherlands. He won the 100 kilometer Oldambrit four of the five times it was contested between 1969 and 1980. In 1994, at the age of 57, he set a world record by skating 655.7 kilometers in 24 hours at the outdoor 400 meter oval in Baselga di Pine.
