1981 DUTCH SUPERSTARS

After a five year absence, Superstars returned to the Netherlands, with a different format. Each athlete entered eight of nine events and points were awarded on an 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis. The only entrant with previous Superstars experience was karate champion Otti Roethof, who had finished third at the 1979 European Superstars. However, Roethof suffered a groin injury in the final of the 100 meters and was forced to withdraw from the rest of the competition. Athletes who were tied in an event, did not split the points, but both received the point allocation for the higher place, for instance, a tie for first place in the soccer event, earned both athletes 8 points, rather than 7 1/2 each. Motocross racer Gerard Rond took an early lead by winning two of the first three events, swimming and cyclocross. Auto racer Huub Vermeueln won canoeing and shooting and finished second in the 100 meters to take the lead after five events. The sixth event was the gym test, a combination of an obstacle course and pull ups. Formula One driver Jan Lammers won both parts of the event to take the eight points for first place. Dick Schoenaker, the Ajax midfielder, won the basketball event and emerged with the lead after seven events. Scheonaker had 37 points while Vermuelen, Ajax winger Tscheu La Ling and Rond each had 36 points. The penultimate event was soccer, which both footballers were excluded from. Vermuelen finished third in the soccer and entered the final event with a 42-40 lead over Rond with Schoenaker at 37 and Ling at 36. In the 600 meter steeplechase, Vermuelen just needed to finish in the top five and within one place of Rond to capture the overall title. He did just enough as Rond, who had injured his leg in the obstacle course, struggled and the two Ajax stars battled for the win. Schoenaker set the pace, but faltered over the final hurdle and Ling sprinted to victory. Vermeulen was passed by Lammers in the final meters, but seemed more than satisfied with a fourth place finish to clinch the overall title. Had the traditional Superstars scoring of 10-7-4-2-1 been used, Ling would have defeated Vermeuelen, 37 1/2 points to 37.

Fanny Blankers-Koen Stadium in Hengelo and Het Hulsbeek in Oldenzaal.
