1979 EUROPEAN SUPERSTARS

Dutch field hockey player Ties Kruize returned to defend his title against recently crowned British champion Brian Jacks. With no preliminary rounds, the competition level was pretty top heavy. The top four athletes won eight of the nine events and also accounted for eight second place finishes. Dutch karate world champion Otti Roethof won the 100 meter dash and the archery to jump out to an early lead. In the fourth event, Kruize edged Jacks in a photo finish in swimming. Kruize followed up with a win in the soccer penalties to move into first place. Jacks had to battle back to get in contention, he finished second in the obstacle course and battled Lynn Davies in the weight lifting. The 77 kilogram long jumper lifted 105 kilograms and forced the heavier Jacks to lift 112.5 kilos to win. Jacks was unsuccessful and trailed Kruize by three points with two events remaining. Jacks was only entered in cycling and Kruize in the steeplechase. Jacks set a record of 13.56 seconds for the 200 meter flying start on the Ahoy Stadium velodrome. Kruize needed to finish first in the steeplechase to win outright, a second place would result in a tie with Jacks and a third place would give the title to Jacks. Lynn Davies surged ahead to win as expected, but Kruize battled Roethof for second place. On the final lap, Kruize strained his foot and Roethof moved into second. However, just as he had done in 1977, Kruize sprinted to a second place finish. The tiebreaking procedure could not separate Jacks from Kruize, so both men were crowned European Champion.
