"Pistol Pete" set N.C.A.A. records at Louisiana State University with 3,667 career points and an average of 44.2 points per game. Both records still stand. Maravich played for the Atlanta Hawks and New Orleans Jazz in the N.B.A., leading the league in scoring in 1976-'77. Maravich was a five-time NBA All-Star and was selected All-NBA First Team in 1976 and '77. A leg injury in 1978 and a descent into alcoholism led to his early retirement in 1980. He was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1986. Maravich died of a heart attack stemming from an undetected congenital heart condition while playing a pickup basketball game in Pasadena, California. Maravich was forty years old.
