McDonald played sixteen seasons in the N.H.L. with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies and . The Maple Leafs selected him with the fourth overall pick in the 1973 NHL draft. McDonald was a second team all-star in 1977 and 1983. McDonald captained the Calgary Flames to the Stanley Cup in 1989. He totaled 500 goals and 1006 points during his career. In 1992, McDonald was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
