Van Wieren played in the Dutch Hockey League from 1971 to 1985. He scored two goals and had eight assists at the 1979 World "B" Championships, leading the Netherlands to the title and their only Olympic berth at the 1980 Games. In Lake Placid, Van Wieren scored a goal against Finland and added four assists as the Dutch finished ninth out of twelve particiapting teams. He later served as coach of the national team from 1988 to 1994.
