Ward earned 19 caps for Ireland, and was awarded the European Player of the Year due to his performance in the Five Nations tournament. He played club for Munster, Leinster and Barbarians. Ward played for Ireland in the inagural World Cup in 1987. He also played domestic soccer for the Smarock Rovers and Limerick United.
