1977 MEN'S FINAL
Soccer player Kyle Rote, Jr. won his unprecedented third Superstars championship over a series of close challengers. Rote set a record of 1:07.00 in the 100 meter swimming event and then took the overall lead with a victory in bowling. The decisive moment of the competition occurred during the bike race final. New Zealand Olympic track champion Peter Snell was lurking in the pack, comfortably controlling the pace of the event when he leaned in an a curve and his inside pedal caught the track, sending Snell out of control. He was able to right himself enough to finish fourth, but Rote's third place finish enabled him to capture his third Superstars title. Had Snell finished first and Rote fourth, Snell would have won the overall event 33 to 32 1/2. Motocross rider Jim Weinert had qualified for the event, but was forced to withdraw when he aggravated an elbow injury practicing for bowling. I do not know if Weinert competed in any events, but he was introduced at the beginning of the TV broadcast, so I have included him as a participant here. Not all of the point totals are confirmed, but I am quite confident from all sources I have been able to access that the results are correct.
