Three-time Olympic Champion

Snell won the 800 meter gold at the 1960 Olympics as a complete unknown. In the next four years, he dominated track & field. In 1962 he set world records of 3:54.4 in the mile, 1:44.3 for 800 meters and won the mile and half mile at the Commonwealth Games. He won the 800 again in Tokyo in 1964 and also captured the 1500 meters. He was ranked number one in the world by Track & Field News at 800 meters in 1960, '61, '62 and '64 and 1500 Meters in 1962, '63 & '64 and was selected at the athletes of the year in 1962 and '64. Snell was selected as New Zealand's athlete of the century.
