"The Great One" holds more hockey records than most people can hold hockey pucks. In 19 N.H.L. seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Lakers, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers, Gretzky score 885 goals, 1910 assists and 2795 points, all records. He was an all-star 16 times (1980-86, '88-92, '94, '96-'98). He was the W.H.A. Rookie of the Year in 1979. Won the Hart Trophy as league M.V.P. nine times (1980-'87, '89), the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship four times (1980, '91, '92 and '94). Gretzky won the Art Ross trophy for scoring ten times (1981-'87, '90, '91 and '94) and the Conn Smythe Trophy for Stanley Cup playoff M.V.P. in 1985 and '88. Gretzky set the N.H.L. record for goals with 92 in 1981-82, he set the record for points in a season with 164 in 1980-'81, broke his own record with 212 points in 1981-'82 and broke it again with 215 in 1985-'86. He also set league record for assists in 1980-'81 with 109, broke it with 120 in 1981-'82, 125 in 1982-'83, 135 in 1984-'85 and finally 163 in 1985-'86. He also led the Edmonton Oilers to four Stanley Cups in 1984, '85, '87 and '88. He was the 1982 Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year. Gretzky was elected to the Hall of Fame immediately following his retirement and his jersey number 99 was retired by every N.H.L. team. Gretzky was selected as the fifth greatest athlete of the 20th century by E.S.P.N.'s SportsCentury.
