1977 MEN'S PRELIMINARY 1

According to Peter Snell, the triple Olympic champion was only invited to Superstars as a second choice. The organizers had contacted 1976 Olympic 1500 meter champion John Walker of New Zealand to participate. Walker was unavailable and recommnede Snell, who was living in the United States. The veterans' preliminary came down to Jim Taylor and Peter Snell. When Taylor failed to score a point in the obstacle course and Snell made the final, it became clear. If Floyd Little defeated Snell in the obstacle course final, Taylor would win the overall competition. Little appeared to win and was hugged at the finish line by Taylor's wife Dixie, but a penalty at the tires gave the obstacle course and overall win to Snell. Little's error cost himself $300 and Taylor $5,000.
